Weather Brief – Potential Tropical Cyclone 19 – Florida Keys of Monroe County

A short weather brief concerning newly-designated Potential Tropical Cyclone 19 for the Florida Keys of Monroe County is below.

  • An organizing tropical disturbance over the central Caribbean Sea does not yet have the organization to be designated as a tropical depression at this time, but is expected to further organize and strengthen to a tropical storm on Thursday.  Due to the likelihood of impacts within 48 hours to portions of the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua, advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone 19 have been started.
  • A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for all the coastal waters of the Florida Keys
  • A Coastal Flood Statement is in effect for all the Florida Keys
  • Steering mechanisms, storm structure, interactions with land, and intensity changes will all play a role in the future track of Potential Tropical Cyclone 19.  While all of the Florida Keys are outside the 5-day forecast track cone, the potential impacts to the Florida Keys, if any, are possible during the middle of next week.
  • Things to do:

○Consult trusted sources for tropical cyclone information:  hurricanes.gov, weather.gov/key, and @NWSKeyWest on Facebook and X (former Twitter).

○Assess your risk now when you have time to think and plan, and not when a hurricane threat is imminent.

○Every tropical cyclone’s impact is unique.  Do not assume the potential weather impacts will be the exact same at your location as a past tropical cyclone that seemed to have a similar track or intensity as the forecast for Potential Tropical Cyclone 19.

○Stay weather-aware and routinely check for forecast updates.  Do not anchor on initial forecasts as there will be adjustments to the forecast track cone.  Remember, the forecast track cone is based on the average error over the past five years, and the center of the storm will remain inside the cone ⅔ of the time.

The next Weather Brief concerning Potential Tropical Cyclone 19 for the Florida Keys of Monroe County will be issued by 9:00 am ET Thursday morning.
