IRMA Recovery Update 6:30PM EOC Call 9/16/17
**IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO KEY COLONY BEACH RESIDENTS**
KCB is open for residents as of TODAY, September 16, 2017. Make sure you have paperwork showing residence or property ownership to be able to get through the checkpoint in Florida City. A hurricane entry sticker makes it easier. The opening of the middle and lower keys are for RESIDENTS and DISASTER RECOVER WORKERS WHO ARE AUTHORIZED.
Please go to www.keysrecovery.org (This was a typo at last update)
*All returning residents must be self-sufficient (including their own food, water and fuel to sustain themselves). You cannot rely on Electric to be operational. You cannot rely on obtaining food or water from distribution centers.
*Many hazards still exit in the area. Use extreme caution once you arrive. If you do not absolutely need to come to KCB, consider waiting as long as you can. Safety first!
*A disaster recovery center will be opening at Marathon City Park in the future.
*We encourage you to bring RVs, Motorhomes, etc., to potentially live in (on your property). Your home may not be livable at this point. I have instructed our Code Enforcement Officer to temporarily suspend enforcement of RV/Motorhome compliance. Make sure these vehicles are on your property; out of the City right-of-way or city streets. Be prepared to live elsewhere if your home condition is uninhabitable. There are limited accommodations elsewhere.
*A BOIL WATER Notice remains in effect and will continue until further instructed. There is now an emergency order making it a 2nd degree misdemeanor for improper use of water. Sanitation purposes ONLY. Water is limited, conserve water!
*When you do receive Electric Service, the power may continue to be unstable as the system continues to be worked on.
*Garbage service resumed today on their regular schedule. This does not include yard waste. Separate all debris at the street moving forward. If household garbage is mixed with storm debris it will not be collected and removal will be the homeowner’s responsibility.
*Unfortunately SCAMs can happen during recovery. Only hire licensed and insured contractors. Work this through the City for added protection.
*KCB Video/Pictures are being taken by TV88 and are now posted on the website.
*Electric Co-op trucks continued in KCB today working on the grid. Some roads are blocked off during this restoration. The road blockage is fluid, so please be patient when you arrive. The Co-op still suggests only 30% – 40% oh homes are powered up in the greater Marathon area.
*City Hall is on regular power. The office is closed for regular business. Staff is generally moving about the City or at City Hall to deal with issues. Be Patient.
*Our Sewer Plant continues to function well, with some minor problems. We switched from generator to electric power today.
*Stay away from all Ports, Marinas, and all nearshore waterways. It is dangerous to travel on the water with debris, down powerlines, sunken boats, etc.… FWC and the Coast Guard are on the water and are strictly enforcing their jurisdictional power. Easy answer… don’t get in a boat and come to the keys at this time.
*Fisherman’s is still closed but trying to have a mobile hospital in place no later than Wednesday. Mariner’s is 24/7 with limited but improved service. The armed services set up a mobile hospital at Marathon City Hall.
