A Marginal Risk of Severe Thunderstorms over the Florida Keys
Late This Afternoon Through Evening
Issued: February 24, 2025 – 9:00 am EST
This weather briefing is for emergency management and critical infrastructure core partners serving the Florida Keys of Monroe County.
NO WATCHES, WARNINGS OR ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE FLORIDA KEYS AT THIS TIME
Bottom Line:
There is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms late this afternoon through late this evening over the Florida Keys, with localized damaging wind gusts near 60 mph and a brief tornado or two the primary threats.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked all of the Florida Keys for a MARGINAL RISK (Level 1 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms through tonight.
Timing: While an episode of steady rain with scattered embedded stronger showers and thunderstorms is expected to overspread the Florida Keys this morning through midday, the highest risk for severe thunderstorms is expected during the 7:00 pm through midnight time range.
Situation Overview:
A complex of rain and embedded stronger thunderstorms is presently moving into the Florida Keys from the west this morning. Locally heavy downpours and locally gusty winds may occur as this area of disturbed weather moves east and south of the Keys early this afternoon. However, the greater threat for localized damaging winds or a brief tornado or two late this afternoon and evening will be result of strengthening low pressure over the east-central Gulf crossing South Florida tonight with a trailing cold front moving through the Florida Keys.
While locally heavy downpours may occur, general rainfall in the range of 1 to 2 inches is most likely, with a few locations possibly receiving 2 to 3 inches. Temporary ponding of water on poor drainage streets is possible, but no widespread flooding is expected in the Florida Keys at this time.
