Weather Brief – Critical Fire Weather (Upper Keys) and Cold Temperatures (mainly Upper Keys) tonight.

New Information:  Critical Fire Weather Conditions are expected today in the Upper Florida Keys (Ocean Reef through Islamorada) due to low relative humidity and northwest to north winds of 15 to 20 mph, especially from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm today.

Key Messages:

  • Temperatures will likely fall into the lower to mid-40s in the Upper Keys tonight through early Tuesday morning, with wind chills as low as 35 to 42 degrees expected from Ocean Reef and Key Largo through Islamorada, and from 42 to 50 degrees in the Middle Keys including Layton, Key Colony Beach, and Marathon.
  • Critical fire weather conditions for a combination of winds of 15 to 20 mph and relative humidity as low as 25 to 35 percent this afternoon are expected in the Upper Keys today through early evening.  Any fires that do develop could spread rapidly.
  • Hazardous marine wind and sea conditions are likely to continue through Tuesday morning.

Sustained northwest to north winds of 15 to 20 mph with relative humidity as low as 25 to 35% is expected between 10:00 am and 7:00 pm for the Upper Florida Keys, including Ocean Reef, Key Largo, Rock Harbor, Tavernier, and Islamorada.  There is a low confidence potential for smoke from existing fires on the South Florida mainland to reach portions of the Upper Keys tonight.

Avoid open flames or sparks.  Keep vehicles off dry grass.  Properly discard cigarettes.  Any fires that develop could spread rapidly.
