Weather Brief – Combined King Tide & Rainfall Impacts – Florida Keys of Monroe County

Coastal Flooding Potential

  • A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY remains in effect for the Upper Florida Keys, primarily for the Bayside of Key Largo, for moderate saltwater tide flooding of low elevation streets and lots, overflowing storm drains, and overtopped docks.  A COASTAL FLOOD STATEMENT for minor saltwater tide flooding is in effect for the Middle and Lower Florida Keys.
  • This morning (Thursday), tides are running around 0.5 to 0.7 feet higher than lunar/astronomical tide prediction charts indicate.
  • Minor to moderate saltwater flooding is expected to continue throughout much of this week.
  • The higher high tide is during the late evening through early pre-dawn hours through this weekend.
  • Tides are expected to continue around 0.5 to 0.7 feet above normal predicted values, with the peak tides are expected to reach between 3 and 9 inches deep in the lowest streets and lots in areas prone to King Tide flooding.

Rainfall Outlook

  • The chance of exceeding one inch of rainfall through this evening ranges from 40 to 60 percent at each Florida Keys community.  The chances for similar heavy downpours begins to decrease tonight and Friday closer to 20 to 30 percent,  and down to 5 to 10 percent Friday night through Saturday.
  • The above-normal rain chances will occur as a high altitude trough of low pressure across the eastern Gulf brings deep tropical moisture northward over the Florida Keys.  Eventually building high pressure along the eastern seaboard and western north Atlantic will allow slightly drier air to move in, decreasing rain chances to near or even below average values for early October by early next week.

The next brief will be issued around 9:30 am Friday October 2.
