Community Rating System (CRS)

The National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System was implemented in 1990 as a program for recognizing and encouraging community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP standards. A points system is used to create the class structure. Ratings from class 10 (lowest) to class 1 (highest) are possible within CRS. Each class represents 500 points. The point system program reduces flood insurance premiums for the citizens of Key Colony Beach. Key Colony Beach’s current rating is 7 (flood insurance discount of 15%).

CRS has three goals: reduce flood losses, facilitate accurate insurance ratings and promote awareness of flood insurance.

To accomplish these goals, a comprehensive list of possible activities was established. Points are awarded to the community for documented action, regulations or plans that correlate with the four main areas of emphasis, which are:

  • Public Information Activities
  • Mapping and Regulatory Activities
  • Flood Damage Reduction Activities
  • Flood Preparedness Activities

The City of Key Colony Beach has established a 5 person committee that meets monthly and is currently working on achieving a higher CRS rating. The goal of the committee is to reach a minimum CRS rating of 5 (25% flood insurance reduction) by 2022/2023.
